Advocating for Patient Safety is Job 1 at ReaLifeSim

Patient safety experts agree communication and teamwork skills are essential for providing quality care. “When all clinical and non-clinical staff collaborate effectively, health care teams can improve patient outcomes, prevent medical errors, improve efficiency and increase patient satisfaction. Health care teams that communicate effectively and work collaboratively reduce the potential for error, resulting in enhanced patient safe- ty and improved clinical performance.” (https://bit.ly/2CTCwaD).

In the world of healthcare, more emphasis is being placed on training in human factors routinely provided to staff, similar to other safety-critical industries. Case studies, role plays and realistic simulated practice, for example, are used to improve emotion regulation, reflective ability, emotional intelligence and empathy.

With ReaLifeSim and VetReaLifeSim, learners safely practice hands-on clinical skills working with a live person or a live animal (veterinary care), relating to them as they would in a real-life situation, promoting a heightened sense of “presence” and emotional connection. We designed ReaLifeSim because it was needed in our clinical education environments. We needed a better way to "train the way you treat". ReaLifeSim is continuously redefining clinical simulation training using state of the art IoT and cloud technology to provide the opportunity for learners to safely experience the influence of human factors. After working with ReaLifeSim or VetReaLifeSim, learners and providers report they are more competent and confident, helping them to feel more comfortable communicating with their patients - which can contribute to reduced preventable medical errors, reduced time to treatment, and increased patient satisfaction.

Congratulations went to Kristi Cox Burns, MEd, BSN, an alumnus of the East Texas Baptist University School of Nursing, and Assistant Professor and Simulation Coordinator at her alma mater. Located in Marshall, TX, #ETBU offers a pre-licensure BSN degree, as well as an RN-BSN degree. 

“This would be great for our students to get to see what it’s really like to start an IV on a patient.” 

Given her current doctoral research interests in interprofessional collaboration in healthcare and nursing and the use of simulation in nursing education, it’s no surprise why Professor Burns is enthusiastic about using the wearable ReaLifeSim hybrid simulation IV trainer with her students.

Congratulations went to Thomas Fitts, AAS, BSN, Associate Professor, Emergency Medical Services and EMS Program Coordinator, at East Central College in Union, Missouri. East Central College, a three-campus institution, offers a program of study leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree and Certificate of Achievement in Paramedic Technology.

“This would be a great opportunity for our Paramedic students! Being able to start IV's in "real life" situations such as in a car or with a moving patient, will be a huge advantage.”

At #eastcentralcollege, Paramedic students complete classroom and laboratory activities with clinical experiences in an acute care setting. Congratulations went to Kimberly Cooper, MSN, RN, CNE, Assistant Professor at Carr College of Nursing, Harding University, a private, Christian university in Searcy, Arkansas. Carr offers a variety of pathways resulting in baccalaureate and graduate level nursing degree programs boasting a 100% pass rate for seven consecutive semesters

“Our Sim Lab will be so much more "real" with ReaLifeSim. I had been emailing with a representative of ReaLifeSim for a few months and our resources committee wanted to see a demo, before we asked for the money. So now, I have a set!”

#Harding students pursue various programs of study at one of five in-state and seven international campuses and are well prepared to enter the work world when they graduate. Prof. Cooper is eager to use the ReaLifeSim IV trainer in their skills/sim lab.

WEEK 4

Congratulations went to Ed Rovera, MSEd, CHSE, CHSOS, Dir. Operations for the Nursing Simulation Complex and Simulation Educator at San Francisco State University School of Nursing. #SFSU has a well-defined, stepped skills training program with basic skills taught the first semester, followed by mental and reproductive health the second and adult medical and pediatrics in the third.

“With this starter set, I will be able to demonstrate how students benefit from more practice to then be competent when they are doing the skills in a clinical setting. The ReaLifeSim Starter Set will get used, I assure you!”

Rovera plans to set up “Refresher Stations” in the Experiential Learning Suite (ELS) and Standardized Patient Area (SPA) prior to scheduled simulation sessions to allow students to come in early and practice with the wearable ReaLifeSim hybrid IV simulation IV trainer for 10 to 15 minutes before their simulation session begins.

Fall into Safe, Realistic IV Skills Practice

Members of EMS teams, whether EMTs at the basic, intermediate or advanced level and paramedics - all learn, enhance and maintain their skills and confidence through training and repeated practice. The more realistic the training, whether in terms of equipment, process, roles, team communication, scenario or environment, the better the experience and the more engrained the lessons learned. 

ReaLifeSim wearable, hybrid IV Trainer is designed to be worn by a live person, whether a fellow learner or standardized patient, to enhance the realism of this essential clinical intervention skill. It can also be used with a manikin.

Wrapping up #HcSimWeek 2018

Some final thoughts as we wrap up an exciting Simulation in Healthcare Week 2018. We trust excitement was generated not only by what you saw others doing, but also by what you and your organization have accomplished, as well. In the effort to keep moving forward we can, occasionally, lose sight of just how far we’ve come.

One of the healthcare buzzwords of the past, but always pertinent, is “holistic”. The holistic philosophy considers the mind, body, spirit and emotions of the individual. What the holistic approach has taught us is fixing the broken part is not enough. Delivering quality healthcare must address the mind, spirit and emotions, as well.

As members of the simulation community, we are proud of our collective efforts in advancing the effectiveness, efficiency and safety of healthcare delivery. Through the expanding use of standardized patients, interprofessional training scenarios and the burgeoning application of virtual and augmented reality platforms, simulation in healthcare is continually widening its holistic approach.

"Perfect Practice makes Perfect"

Most of us will recognize the old adage, “practice makes perfect.” I’ve seen that modified, appropriately I believe, to “perfect practice makes perfect.” True skill is the result of repeated practice, followed by expert feedback to move each subsequent attempt closer to perfection until the mental focus and physical performance move as a unit into the realm of muscle memory and become “automatically” perfect every time. That level of competence feeds the sense of confidence necessary to permit one to employ that skill whenever needed, under any circumstance.

Exploring every option to enhance the realism presented in training our future doctors, nurses and clinicians is at the heart of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s mission. ReaLifeSim, LLC supports their efforts and shares in their advocacy.

Healthcare Simulation Week Kicks off TODAY!

Today is the beginning of Healthcare Simulation Week 2018. This week celebrates all those who design, build, test, sell and use the ever-widening variety of simulation products to educate, train, practice and ultimately deliver safe, high quality healthcare with competence, confidence, efficiency and effectiveness to those who need it.

While simulation is a “hot topic” in healthcare today, it has been around in some form for many years, even with such rudimentary efforts as practicing injections using an orange or a semi-rigid block of material that mimicked skin density.

Today, the confluence of advances in materials science, miniature wireless electronics, robotics, computer-driven software programs, virtual and augmented reality devices have produced an incredible array of hardware and software products bringing clinical students and practitioners alike very life-like experiences in their training scenarios.

The end goal of all this effort - improved patient outcomes – is very much worth celebrating. ReaLifeSim, LLC salutes the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and all those working in the healthcare simulation field.

Emphasizing standardized patients and additional realism with ReaLifeSim

Andrew Spain wrote "Standardized patients are defined as “a person who has been carefully coached to simulate an actual patient so accurately that the simulation cannot be detected by a skilled clinician."

Why wouldn't we want to emphasize realism during our scenarios?

How can this be achieved with a real person next to a manikin arm to start an IV?

What if there was a device that was not over engineered - portable - lightweight - adaptable to almost every scenario?

The simulation world grows immensely everyday in every direction. From SP's to lab equipment and scenarios, the possibilities are truly endless. 

What if along comes a product that can throw a curve ball for a "typical clinical training scenario"?

The Shift to Competency-Based Medical Education
